Peptide drugs went from a quiet corner of pharma to one of its loudest growth stories, and almost all of that momentum traces back to a single class of molecules. Here is the peptide therapeutics market by the numbers, the clinical results driving it, and an honest look at how widely the size estimates disagree, updated for 2026.
The headline numbers
Peptides in four figures.
Figures per Global Market Insights (2025). Estimates vary widely by source, see below.
The trajectory
On track to roughly double in a decade.
On the most widely cited pure-peptide estimate, the market grows from about $46 billion in 2024 to roughly $100 billion by 2034, an 8.1% compound annual rate. The endpoints are reported; the path between them follows the stated growth rate.

A big caveat
The estimates disagree, a lot.
Market sizes for peptides range from about $32 billion to over $400 billion for the same year. The spread is mostly a definitions problem: some firms count only peptides, others bundle in larger protein biologics. Treat any single number with caution.
| Source | Base value | Projection | CAGR |

| Strategic Market Research | $32.2B (2024) | $50.5B by 2030 | 7.8% |
| Intel Market Research | $37.4B (2024) | $70.7B by 2032 | 9.7% |
| Towards Healthcare | $49.2B (2024) | $81.5B by 2034 | 5.4% |
| Roots Analysis | $72.2B (2024) | $162.4B by 2035 | 6.8% |
| Polaris Market Research | $116.1B (2024) | through 2034 | 10.5% |
| Research and Markets | $117.3B (2024) | $260.3B by 2030 | 10.8% |
| Grand View Research | $140.9B (2025) | $294.6B by 2033 | 8.7% |
| Frost & Sullivan (protein + peptide) | $422.7B (2024) | $713.0B by 2030 | 9.1% |

Who owns it
Five companies, sixty percent.
The market is concentrated. Novo Nordisk alone held over 17% in 2024, and the top five players, Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly, Bristol Myers Squibb, Ferring, and Merck, controlled 60% between them.

Branded dominance
Still overwhelmingly branded.
Branded peptides made up 69.2% of the market in 2024, reflecting how much of the value sits in patent-protected, premium-priced drugs rather than generics.

What is driving it
The growth is mostly one drug class.
The single biggest force behind the peptide market is the GLP-1 class used for diabetes and obesity. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, tirzepatide produced average weight loss of up to 22.5% at the highest dose over 72 weeks.

The duel
Tirzepatide vs semaglutide, head to head.
In the first direct comparison of the two leading drugs, SURMOUNT-5, tirzepatide produced more weight loss than semaglutide over 72 weeks, 20.2% versus 13.7%, a 47% greater relative reduction.

By the numbers
More patients hit the high targets.
The gap widens at the most demanding thresholds. In SURMOUNT-5, far more tirzepatide patients reached 20% and 25% weight loss than those on semaglutide.

Not just weight
The diabetes numbers are strong too.
Peptides earned their place in diabetes care first. In the SURPASS-2 trial, tirzepatide cut HbA1c, the key blood-sugar marker, by up to 2.30 percentage points depending on dose.

| Trial | Drug | Headline result |
|---|---|---|
| SURMOUNT-1 | Tirzepatide 15 mg | 22.5% weight loss at 72 weeks |
| SURMOUNT-5 | Tirzepatide vs semaglutide | 20.2% vs 13.7% weight loss |

The bigger picture
A century-old idea, suddenly everywhere.
Peptides are short strings of amino acids, the same building blocks the body uses to make its own signaling molecules. Insulin, introduced in the 1920s, was the first, and for decades peptide drugs stayed mostly in diabetes and hormone therapy, held back by a stubborn problem: swallow a peptide and the gut digests it like food, so most have to be injected. The recent surge comes from the GLP-1 class, which mimics gut hormones that regulate blood sugar and appetite. Their results in diabetes and obesity have been strong enough to reshape the entire market, which is why so much of the growth in the charts above traces back to a handful of molecules. The next frontier is delivery: making peptides that survive the stomach would open the category far wider, and oral formulations are the fastest-growing segment for exactly that reason.
One drug class turned a quiet category into one of pharma's biggest growth stories.
